Why Did My Air Conditioner Freeze Up?

Posted on July 27th, 2017

ac repair gilbert az | plumbing & ac medicWe want our air conditioning system to cool our home — but a frozen A/C means trouble. Although it might seem counterintuitive, this is actually a very common air conditioning problem. These are just a few of the most common reasons why air conditioners freeze up.

Why Your A/C Freezes Up:

  • There is not enough air flow. If your air conditioning system is not properly blowing air over the evaporator coil, the freon that should be removing heat from your home is not doing its job. Overtime, as the temperature drops, the air conditioning will freeze up. This is commonly due to a dirty air filter — replace or clean yours to see if that fixes your A/C problem.
  • You don’t have enough refrigerant.  If you do not have enough freon in your system, your air conditioner’s evaporator coil will freeze and ice up. This could be due to a leak. If you think that you have a leak, it’s important to have your system inspected.
  • There is something wrong with your refrigerant line. A kink in your refrigerant line will keep your air conditioning system from running properly — causing your central A/C to freeze up.
