Common Plumbing Problems Found in Homes

Posted on December 11th, 2019

Home plumbing problems often seem to spring up out of the blue. One day, you notice that the bathroom sink doesn’t drain or your toilet won’t flush. Frustrating as they are, these types of plumbing problems are extremely common and usually easy to repair.

Here are a few of the most common plumbing issues you may encounter in your home.

The Most Common Plumbing Problems

Leaky Faucets

A dripping faucet may seem like just an annoyance, but it can actually raise your water bill by over 10 percent each month. The average American home uses 400 gallons of water every single day. The U.S. Geological Survey designed a drip calendar to help you figure out how many additional gallons of water your leaky faucets could cost you.

The good news is that this is one of the easiest plumbing problems to fix. A simple cartridge replacement can stop the leak, but if that doesn’t work, you may want to call in a professional and see where the problem is coming from.

Sinks Drain Slowly

A common clog will cause your sink’s drain pipe to struggle. Clogs are normal, especially in bathroom sinks that experience a build-up of skin, hair, and soap. A technician can remove a clog without using harsh chemicals, but you can find some over-the-counter options that should be able to have your drain back up and running in no time.

A word of caution: never mix products when cleaning a drain; chemical combinations can produce poisonous gases that can be fatal.

Clogged Toilet

A clogged toilet can ignite panic in the heart of anyone, but don’t worry too much. A plunger or simple snake auger (also known as a “snake”) from your local home improvement store should be able to fix the problem. If you notice your toilet running after it’s been fixed, a professional repair is advised.

Garbage Disposal Won’t Work

A jammed garbage disposal can often be fixed by hitting its reset button, but if that doesn’t work, you’ll need to open it up and see what’s gotten stuck.

Reminder: never stick your hand into a garbage disposal; if you need to get something that’s fallen inside, turn off the disposal and use something to reach inside and grab the object.
