How to Clean Up Grease

Posted on February 2nd, 2017

Whether you are frying up a pan of bacon or sauteing veggies in a skillet, grease splatter is almost unavoidable. Not to mention, you’ll need to clean the pan itself, too. Unfortunately, grease is difficult to clean and when you wash the frying pan in the sink, you may find yourself with an unexpected plumbing problem.

Why is grease a plumbing nightmare?

Although grease looks like a liquid when it’s hot, it can actually cling to the sides of your plumbing pipes when it has cooled. This means that water can’t pass through your pipes efficiently, leaving you with a clogged, slow draining kitchen sink.

How to Clean Up Grease:

Don’t dump it down the drain. Throw away any leftover grease in a disposable container.

  • Clean up recent spills with flour. If you have a recent grease spill that is still wet, sprinkle some flour on the spot to soak up the oil. Let the flour sit for about 20 minutes. Afterwards, brush the loose flour into the garbage and wipe up any remaining paste.

  • Dissolve grease with baking soda and water. Baking soda is a wonderful all-purpose cleaning solution. Since this is such a mild cleaner, it is perfect for cleaning up grease without destroying your stove and countertops.

  • Destroy tough stains with vinegar. For caked-on grease stains, you’ll need a stronger cleaning solution. Spray vinegar on the stain and let it soak. This will help soften the grease and make it easier to scrub.
