Is my Thermostat Broken?

Posted on June 14th, 2018

One of the most popular questions asked among homeowners is the following: “Is my thermostat broken?” Granted, nine out of ten times it may seem like that’s the case — but, in reality, this temperature-controlling device may be perfectly fine. If you’re not sure where to start, or what to look for, then here are some helpful tips to know:

Orange-Thermostat

Location, Location, Location!

When you initially think that your thermostat is broken, it’s best to check the location of where it’s placed. Of course, your device could have been installed in a particular spot years ago — but it doesn’t necessarily mean it was put in the right place.

Believe it or not, thermostats should be installed away from any window and doors that lead to the outdoors. The reason? This will give the thermostat the wrong signal, and it will ultimately work against your favor. If you need your temperature controlling device to be relocated or need a new thermostat, contact Plumbing & A/C
Medic to get the job done!

Is This Thing Working?

Another prime suspect in affecting your thermostat’s performance is checking your settings. Sometimes, it’s possible that you have your device set to a specific temperature or energy-saving mode — which will then affect your heating/cooling in your home. If you’re not too sure what you set your thermostat to, then the solution is simple: just check it.

When checking the settings on your thermostat, you want to look for the following:

  • Carefully observe the temperature you have the device set to. Is the temperature set too high/low? Decide what seems to be the best fit (it can always be adjusted later on).
  • Is your device set to fan mode? If so, you can adjust the setting and shut it off.
  • Did you place it on energy-saving mode? If that’s the case, then you can turn the feature off until it’s needed.
  • Make sure that all the appropriate switches are set on.

The Outcome.

If you have gone through these steps and still, your thermostat isn’t functioning correctly, then you may need to have your device replaced or relocated.
