It May Be Time for an A/C Tune-Up
Posted on May 7th, 2018
Even though air conditioning is practically a must for most of the country, people tend to take their A/C for granted. A good air conditioning system will last for close to 20 years as long as it’s well-maintained, but it does need a tune-up once in a while, preferably at the very beginning of the cooling season in the spring. This should be done annually to make sure that the ducts are clean, there is enough freon in the central unit, and just to make sure that everything is in good working order.
Ideally, this kind of annual maintenance should be all you need if you have a newer air conditioner that hasn’t given you a lot of trouble, but you may have to call an HVAC contractor for a tune-up or repair more often than that. It will depend on the state of your air conditioner, but here are some signs that it may be time for an A/C tune-up.
Higher Energy Bills
If your energy bills start to go up even though you haven’t had your thermostat set at a particularly cool temperature, it could be a sign that your air conditioner isn’t as efficient as it once was. This can happen to older systems that are nearing the end of their lifespan, but it can also happen to a system in dire need of a tune-up. Contact a repair technician to check your air ducts and make sure they’re clean enough to allow air to circulate throughout your home.
Your Air Conditioner is Over 15 Years Old
Speaking of older air conditioning systems, you should be on the lookout for more issues if your system is older than 15 years old. This is usually about the time you should consider a replacement, but you might be able to get at least a few more years out of your system if you have it maintained regularly and catch minor problems before they get out of hand.
You Notice Strange Sounds Coming From Your Central Unit
Air conditioners are almost silent when they run. All you should hear is a faint whoosh when it’s turned on, so if you hear any rattling or knocking coming from your central unit, there is something wrong that needs to be checked out.
The thing to remember about A/C is that it requires at least some maintenance if it is to function correctly for you and your family. Contact an HVAC repair service to check out your system every spring, and don’t hesitate to make an emergency call if you suspect that there is something wrong with your system. It’s a lot easier to make small repairs than larger ones.
