Tips for Choosing the Right Size Water Heater
Posted on June 11th, 2015
Your family’s hot water needs are unique, and therefore you must do a little research before investing in a water heater. Buying a water heater that’s too big is a waste of money, and choosing one that’s too small could lead to cold showers!
Having said that, here are some tips for choosing the right size water heater:
1. Determine your home’s first hour rating (FHR)
FHR is basically the estimated peak hour demand of your water heater. The U.S. Department of Energy has created the following worksheet for estimated your FHR:
Once you’ve come up with your FHR, make a note. You’ll need this number for the next step!
2. Consider each unit’s energy factor (EF)
According to HGTV, “The higher the EF, the more efficient the tank is.” It’s in your best interest to find a water heater with the highest possible EF for your FHR. This will keep your energy costs as low as possible while ensuring there’s enough hot water to go around!
When it comes to choosing a water heater, you have quite a few options:
- Gas Water Heaters
- Electric Water Heaters
- Tankless Water Heaters
- Hybrid Water Heaters
