Tips for Choosing the Right Water Filter

Posted on November 6th, 2015

Minerals and chemicals can affect the taste and quality of the tap water in your home. With hard water being the norm in our area, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to install water filtration systems.

Follow these tips for help choosing the right one for our family:

  • Carafe filters – This type of filter is only for drinking water and is meant to be kept in the refrigerator. It stores enough water for one or two people, but not for an entire family.
  • Faucet-mounted filters – Easy to install and use, these filters attach to the kitchen faucet. They’re perfect for treating water used for cooking and drinking.
  • Under-sink filters – The great thing about this type of filter is that it can hold a lot of water. However, it will take up precious under-the-sink cabinet space. You’ll need a professional plumber to hook it up, too.
  • Reverse-osmosis filters – This type of filter is unique in that it uses household pressure to push water through a semi-permeable membrane. It robs cabinet space, but is also the only filter that can remove arsenic.
  • Whole-house filters – There are lots of perks to whole-house filters, including affordability and long cartridge life. However, it’s not going to filter out things like metals and volatile organic compounds.
