Why are Toilets Ceramic or Porcelain?

Posted on March 13th, 2019

When you look at a toilet, did you ever wonder what it’s made of? If so, did you ever question why all toilets are made of either ceramic or porcelain? Believe it or not, it’s rare that you’ll find a “throne” that is composed of any other material. Better yet, when was the last time (if ever) did you spot a toilet of a different material? Without further ado, let’s get to the bottom of this:

Why Ceramic or Porcelain?

When thinking about toilets, they’re used on a daily basis, multiple times, by many different people. Whether the “throne” is located in your home or at a local bar, these necessary features must be sanitary at all times.

Now, if a toilet was to be made from plastic, the waste that passes through the trap (the hole/tube at the bottom that helps waste travel outside of the bathroom) would begin to seep into the material, which would make the toilet quite unsanitary, no matter how many times it’s cleaned.

Since ceramic and porcelain are clean, non-porous materials, they not only help keep the toilet in pristine, sanitary condition, but it also make the cleaning process of the “throne” much easier for the person in charge.

Additional Benefits

Needless to say, a plastic toilet would cause a greater chance of possible breakage (under pressure). Since ceramic and porcelain are much sturdier, there’s less of a chance of them cracking and having a shorter than average lifespan.

Additionally, unlike certain types of plastic, toilets are completely waterproof when they’re made from ceramic and porcelain — which is an excellent characteristic for a toilet to have if you think about it.

Does your Toilet Need to be Replaced?
