Why is it Important to Change a Central Air Filter?

Posted on July 5th, 2018

Believe it or not, one of the most critical pieces of your home to maintain is your central air unit. Of course, this staple of your house gets the most usage in the summertime — and so does your air filter, too. If you ten to overlook the status of your filter, then here are some reasons why you should give it a little more attention:

Preserves your Unit

One of the most important reasons why you should change your air filter, regularly, is that it will preserve your unit. Nine out of ten times, a central air unit will have to work twice as hard to fight through the dirt and debris. Granted, a dirty air filter won’t destroy your unit right away — but if neglected for quite some time, it will take a toll.

The best advice is this: replace your air filter at least every 60 days — which factors out to approximately two months. This will not only help your unit thrive to its full potential, but it will also preserve it in the long run.

Positive Indoor Air Quality

Another important aspect of changing your air filters regularly is that it will promote positive indoor air quality. As you know, it’s essential to have this in your home, since it will not only maintain excellent respiratory health, but it will cut costs on your cooling unit, too!

When you continuously use the same air filter for months at a time, not only will it diminish the quality of the air being produced, but it will continue to build up airborne dirt and debris when you least expect it. The simplest solution? Replace your air filter as frequently as possible (once a month) if you want to improve your indoor air quality drastically.

Saves Energy

Looking for one of the best ways to save energy in your home? You guessed it: change the air filter. Believe it or not, when your unit runs on a dirty, musty, old air filter, it will double the amount of energy being used (by your unit)  to cool your home down.

Think of a dirty air filter a  blockage in the veins of the human body: the heart will have to pump twice as much to let the blood pass the obstruction.

To eliminate this, always spot-check your air filter from month-to-month. This will not only give you a greater sense as to how often you need to change it, but it will also let you know if your unit is functioning correctly.

If you replace your air filter regularly and your unit isn’t working up to par — then it might be time for a tune-up or repair!
